Sat, May 11, 10:00am: Community Day

On Thursday January 19th, the Dewey Beach Lions Club welcomed Jo Allegro-Smith, Director of the Rehoboth Community Resource Center and presented the organization with a $500 donation.

Jo who has served in various leadership roles with nonprofit organizations to include the YMCA of Delaware, ARC of Pinellas County and the Cancer Support Community. In 2017, she joined the Community Resource Center as its new Executive Director. The Community Resource Center (CRC) is a local nonprofit that has helped thousands in our local area to prevent eviction and utility interruption; and has fed the hungry, paid for medications for the elderly, and ensured that infants and children have access to the basic needs to help them thrive. During the winter months, CRC also offers a day center program for homelessindividuals.

Jo advised that their Food Rescue Program provides food to those who are hungry and helps clients make ends meet by providing rescued food from local grocery stores and restaurants. Last year, we distributed an average of 2,000 bags of food each month. in Addition, CRC's Community Outreach Program provides over $400,000 in emergency financial assistance each year to families in our community to help them avert crisis and the Baby Pantry is generously supported by the Harry K Foundation and provides formula and baby food, infant and toddler clothing, and diapers to ensure children thrive. Each baby pantry session, they assist over 50 families accounting for over 100 children.

CRC also offers a Job Center which assists people to write their resume and prepare for an interview, learn basic computer skills and provides individualized budget counseling. Last but not least The Day Center program at the Community Resource Center supports the area’s homeless population. The purpose of the Day Center is to provide respite, showers, access to laundry and food to clients experiencing homelessness.

Lions have a dynamic history. We are best known for fighting blindness – it’s part of our history as well as our work today. But we also perform volunteer work for many different kinds of community projects – including caring for the environment, feeding the hungry and aiding seniors and the disabled.
